Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) are basic self-care or personal care activities completed on a daily basis. IADLs are instrumental to being able to do an ADL like eating, for instance. If you can’t manage transportation, shop for food, or cook, then eating will be impossible without assistance. Family caregivers help with both IADLs and ADLs.

ADLs are:

  • Eating
  • Bathing
  • Dressing
  • Toileting
  • Transferring (like from bed to chair)
